The University of Chicago has the distinction of being located in the lakefront marsh ecosystem of Lake Michigan and the plant life uniquely indigenous to that region.  Of special interest is the horticultural project directed toward the preservation and health of Elm trees.   Dutch elm disease has claimed the lived of thousands of these beautiful trees in the Chicago region.
