Created in 1853, Union Park was once one of the city's most fashionable places.   It later fell into the hands of Jens Jensen who became responsible for the American Garden of the naturalistic style complete with walking and jogging trails.

The neighborhood eventually became predominately African-American and the park became well-known for African-American cultural and social events with notable musicians participating.  It is still the location for live outdoor concert entertainment.
