What:

2005 marks the 28th year of the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park. As of 1979 it looked like there was going to be three individual jazz festivals produced by three different organizations in Grant park each year and all three of them planned for the month of August.

Instead of having three different annual jazz festivals, the Mayor’s Office of Special Events helped join the three groups together to create the first Chicago Jazz Festival. The new festival showcased Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and also included several other performances presented by the the Jazz Institute of Chicago.  Every year since then the Chicago Jazz Festival has been held on the week before Labor Day.

The festival is now the largest of its kind and public radio stations broadcast it around the United States each year. This year's annual Jazz Festival in Grant Park will offer a "Tribute to New Orleans," featuring performers from the crescent city, honoring the birthplace of Jazz.
